The Diamond 4Cs Explained

The 4Cs are useful because they standardise four important diamond characteristics, but they are not a ranking system where the highest grade is automatically the smartest purchase. The best stone is the one whose visible performance suits your setting and budget.

Cut: how well the diamond handles light

For shapes with formal cut grades, cut is one of the most visually important characteristics. Proportions, symmetry and polish influence brightness, contrast and scintillation. Fancy shapes need more visual assessment because a single overall cut label often does not tell the whole story.

Colour: how much body colour is present

Colourless and near-colourless diamonds are graded on a scale, but the visible difference between neighbouring grades can be subtle. Metal colour, stone size and shape also influence perception, so choose the lowest grade that still looks right to you rather than buying the letter alone.

Clarity: inclusions and blemishes

Clarity grades describe the visibility and nature of internal inclusions and surface blemishes under grading conditions. For jewellery, eye-clean appearance is often more relevant than chasing very high clarity grades that do not change what you can see without magnification.

Carat: weight, not diameter

Carat is a unit of weight. Face-up size depends on shape and proportions, which is why two 1 carat diamonds can have different visible dimensions. Always compare millimetre measurements alongside carat.

Frequently asked questions

Which of the 4Cs is most important?

For many buyers, cut and visible performance should come first, followed by a sensible balance of colour, clarity and carat.

Is VS1 always better than VS2?

VS1 is a higher clarity grade, but a well-chosen VS2 may look identical to the naked eye. Inclusion type and location matter.

Does carat mean size?

Carat measures weight. It correlates with size but does not directly specify the visible length, width or diameter.
