Diamond Shapes: Which One Should You Choose?
Shape changes the personality of a ring more than almost any other choice. It also changes how a given carat weight looks on the hand, how easy inclusions are to see and which setting architecture works best.
Round
Round brilliant diamonds prioritise symmetry and light performance. They are the reference point for classic engagement rings and work in almost every setting.
Oval and pear
These elongated brilliant-style shapes can offer strong visible length and flattering finger coverage. Symmetry and the character of any bow-tie effect deserve close attention.
Emerald and radiant
Emerald cuts use broad step facets for a hall-of-mirrors appearance, while radiants use brilliant-style faceting inside a rectangular or square outline. They can look similarly geometric but perform very differently.
Cushion
Cushions combine rounded corners with square or elongated outlines. Their internal faceting varies widely, so two cushion diamonds with the same basic grades can have very different visual personalities.
Frequently asked questions
Which diamond shape looks biggest?
Elongated shapes can offer strong face-up coverage, but actual millimetre dimensions are the best comparison.
Which shape sparkles most?
Round brilliants are engineered for strong light return, while radiant, oval, pear and cushion shapes can also be highly lively. Emerald cuts intentionally produce a different step-facet look.
Which shape is best for short fingers?
Elongated shapes such as oval, pear or emerald are often chosen to create visual length, but personal preference should lead the decision.
