CVD vs HPHT Lab-Grown Diamonds
CVD and HPHT describe two established ways of growing diamond material. They are production methods, not quality grades. A beautiful or poor diamond can come from either process, which is why the final stone specification and visual assessment matter more than treating one acronym as automatically superior.
HPHT
High Pressure High Temperature growth recreates the high-pressure, high-temperature conditions under which diamond can crystallise. HPHT technology is also used in parts of the diamond industry for treatment and processing.
CVD
Chemical Vapour Deposition grows diamond from carbon-containing gases in a controlled chamber, building material layer by layer on a diamond seed. Post-growth treatment may be used for some stones.
Neither process is a quality grade
Judge the finished diamond on cut, proportions, colour, clarity, transparency, growth features and overall visual performance. The growth method alone does not tell you whether a particular stone is attractive.
Use the grading report
Independent laboratory information can help identify the stone and record its measurable characteristics. Compare the individual diamond rather than choosing solely on CVD versus HPHT.
Frequently asked questions
Is CVD better than HPHT?
Not inherently. Both can produce high-quality diamonds. The quality of the finished stone is what matters.
Are both CVD and HPHT real diamonds?
Yes. Both methods can produce crystalline diamond material.
Can a laboratory identify the growth method?
Specialist gemmological testing can identify growth characteristics and laboratory-grown origin.
